One of the most visited countries in the world, Italy is home to some of the most famous international historical sights such as the Colosseum in Rome, the canals of Venice, and the volcano of Vesuvius. Rail connections are frequent and link Italy to Switzerland, France and Austria as well as many other European cities. Road links are also good, with the E80 coastal motorway joining the French Riviera with Genoa. Many airlines visit Italy, including the majority of the low-cost carriers. The busiest airports are Rome (Leonardo Da Vinci and Campiano), Venice (Treviso and Marco Polo), Milan (Bergamo, Malpensa and Linate) and Pisa (Galileo Galilei). Alitalia is the major airline in operation out of Italy, though British Airways, bmi, Thomas Cook, Ryanair, Jet2.com and easyJet are also regular visitors to the country. Car hire - a recommended option for exploring some of the more picturesque settings, like Tuscany and Sicily - is available from international brands such as Europcar, National, Avis, Hertz, Thrifty and Sixt.
